Why I Use Recycled Gold and Silver: The Beauty of Ethical Jewellery
When you choose a piece of memorial jewellery, you are making a commitment to honour a life lived. To me, it feels only right that such a significant tribute should be kind to the planet.
As a jeweller with 25 years of experience, I’ve seen how the industry has changed. Today, my workshop in Kent exclusively uses recycled gold and silver. Here is why ethical craftsmanship is at the heart of everything I create.
What is Recycled Metal?
Recycled gold and silver are not "second-hand" in quality. They are reclaimed from existing jewellery, industrial components, and electronic waste. This metal is refined back to its purest form, making it identical in quality, look, and durability to newly mined metal.
Whether I am working with 925 Sterling Silver, 18ct Gold, or Platinum, the result is a high-grade, precious metal that will last for generations.
The Environmental Impact
Traditional mining is an incredibly "heavy" process. To extract enough gold for a single wedding band, several tonnes of earth often need to be moved, using significant amounts of water and chemicals.
By choosing recycled metals:
• We reduce CO2 emissions: Refining recycled metal uses a fraction of the energy required for mining.
• We protect ecosystems: There is no new digging, no habitat destruction, and no chemical runoff into local water supplies.
• We embrace the Circular Economy: We take what is already above ground and give it a beautiful new purpose.
The Emotional Connection
There is something poetic about using recycled materials for memorial jewellery. Just as your loved one’s memory lives on in a new form, the metal used to hold their ashes has a history of its own. It is a cycle of renewal.
I often work with clients who bring me their own "old gold"—inherited pieces that sit unworn in a drawer. By melting these down and alloying them into a new design, we create a double tribute: a piece that carries the DNA of an heirloom and the ashes of a loved one.
Craftsmanship Without Compromise
Choosing ethical materials doesn’t mean compromising on beauty. In my workshop, I use the same traditional hand-forging techniques I’ve honed over two decades. The recycled 9ct gold I use has the same warm glow, and the platinum has the same reassuring weight as any mined equivalent.
When you wear one of my pieces, you can feel proud not just of who it represents, but of how it was made.
Making an Ethical Choice
If you are looking for a way to honour a loved one that aligns with your values, recycled memorial jewellery is a beautiful solution. It is a tribute to the past that respects the future of the world we live in.
